A lot of technological development is driven by solutions that key industry actors have chosen to stake their future on. The choices of the few might well affect entire sectors for years to come, be it VHS or Betamax. The choices of big industry actors have ripple effects: they may affect everything from research funding or access to data, to the commercial potential in any given technology.
